Age Groups

  • Sub-Juniors: Age 5- 7 Years
  • Juniors: Age 8- 10 Years
  • Seniors: Age 11 - 13 Years
  • Youth: Age 14 - 17 Years
  • Adults: Age 18 and above

Duration: 4 to 6 Minutes

Genre: Hindustani or Carnatic

Rules & Regulations

  1. Separate competition for each age groups.
  2. Performance should be in one of the Indian classical music genre- Hindustani or Carnatic.
  3. The performer must utilize a Shruti box. There will be no instrumental support from KANE.
  4. Performer should come prepared with any one Kriti.
  5. The performer must know the lyrics and may not use any aids (paper, digital devices, external audio, etc.).
  6. We will not permit any form of coaching or prodding during the performance..
  7. The contestant's age must fall within the specified age category as of January 1 of the current year. The participant must register online prior to the registration deadline and receive an email confirmation number from KANE. KANE maintains the right to seek a participant's birth certificate for age verification (if required).
  8. KANE reserves the right to photograph and/or video record the performances. We may publish such photos/videos post-event.
  9. The Judges' decision will be final.
  10. Any violation of the aforementioned rules may result in disqualification of the contestant/group/team.

 

Judging Guidelines

Total Score: 100

  1. Shruti/Chosen pitch (20 Points): Is the singer in tune with the scale (Shruti) and maintaining correct pitch?.
  2. Laya/Rhythm and Precision (20 Points): Is the singer maintaining consistent tempo(laya) that the composition is set to? Is he/she in sync with the tempo? Is the song flowing smoothly adhering to the tempo and the Taal(Taala) cycles?.
  3. Diction (20 Points): Is the pronunciation clear in the language chosen? Are the words divided appropriately to bring out the right meaning intended by the composer.
  4. Style and Melody (30 Points): Does the singing reflect the purity and traditions of the style chosen (Carnatic or Hindustani)? Can you feel the mood (bhaava) of the melody (raaga) coming through? Is the singing melodious and smooth?. Does the singing include variation of a phrase in a kriti with slight or large changes in tune and gamakas/brigas(sangathis)?
  5. Overall Appeal/Entertainment (10 Points): Is he/she singing with confidence, energy and spirit? Is the singer enjoying what she/he is doing? Does the attire represent traditional Indian ethnicity? Are they engaging the audience with their performance?

    PENALTY APPLIED:

    a) -20 points - if not ready when the name/chest number is called for performance.

All participants must register before the registration ends. Also it is important to obtain a registration confirmation email back from KANE. Click the "REGISTER NOW" button on the top. Once you register, you will get an auto-reply from KANE. However, we will review your registration and will confirm it by replying back to you via email . This confirmation is mandatory to participate in the event.

Prizes

Winners are chosen as follows:

  • If only one participant is registered for this event, a participation certificate/award will be given.
  • If more than one participant, then first, second and third prize winners are declared based on scoring and total participants.
  • Prizes, certificates, trophies/medals will be awarded to all the winners on the same/Finale day.
